I didn't know much about essential oils until a year and a half ago when I was first introduced to essential oils and FUM by my friend and now co-worker Janai. I was blown away by the experience of using peppermint oil in a FUM and bought one on the spot. Since then, I've been in a process of learning more about essential oils.
One practical use that I have learned about is using essential oils is to improve my runs. I came upon these uses as I was training for my first marathon (I'll probably have another blog about this experience soon, stay tuned).
So here are 4 steps to improving your run using essential oils.
1. Know your Essential Oils
If you don't know, you can't benefit. Before you can utilize the benefits of essential oils for your jog you need to know what is out there for you. Here’s what I've learned so far on utilizing essential oils for running.
Eucalyptus- Traditionally used to improve your respiratory condition, and also helpful for decreasing inflammation.
Peppermint - My favorite, super diverse in its benefits and it smells exceptional. Similar to Eucalyptus, Peppermint is great for helping improve your respiratory system performance, it has been shown as well to improve alertness and concentration.
Lavender- A great Essential Oil to utilize for its calming properties. Utilize it post-run to calm down and reset.
While these are definitely not the only essential oils that can benefit you when you are running, these are a great place to start.
Together with the pre-run basics of hydration, getting proper gear, and stretching, you can also use essential oils.
Being able to breathe easily is essential for a good run. Try running when you are completely congested - it’s not going to work. To prepare my respiratory system, I use my FUM with Peppermint. I put a few drops of Peppermint in my FUM about 10 to 20 minutes before my run, then breathe deeply through it while changing into my running gear and stretching. The oils take a little while to get into your system, so doing this beforehand will make sure that your respiratory system is ready to function at its highest level.
Typically when I go for a longer run I'll throw my FUM in my pocket and use it when I take short rest breaks. About every half hour, I stop for a breather and pop out my FUM. A few breaths through it lets me continue to utilize the benefits of peppermint oil throughout the run.
Post run routines are super important for long-term progress. Personally, I usually end off my longer runs with a stretch, some type of food (protein!), and a cold shower.
Essential oils can also be incorporated into your post-run recovery. With their anti-inflammatory properties, Eucalyptus and peppermint can be rubbed on sore muscles to decrease inflammation. We at FUM also use 2 essential oil blends Young Living has specifically created for this called “DEEP RELIEF” and “ PANAWAY . Personally I have found that post-run, the cooling sensation of peppermint is a relief to tired muscles.
I have not personally tried it, but I have also heard that using Lavender essential oil following a run can be great for calming down after exertion. This will be on my to-do list to try.
So that's 4 steps to utilize essential oils for your run, I hope that this is useful to you.
Cheers to health, and better runs!
